”Sicily – An Odyssey of Wine” is the first major promotional event for the IRVOS ( Istituto Regionale Vini e Olii Sicilia – Sicily’s Regional Institute for Viticulture and Olive Oil) in Hong Kong & China, through which you can have direct contact with Sicilian producers and their wines.
Sicily’s current production focuses on elegance and quality showing the new image of Sicilian wines produced by a number of more recently established wineries, which constitute the ‘Renaissance’ of Sicilian wine in the international arena. Sicily today has 23 DOC areas (appellations) of production and one DOCG Cerasuolo di Vittoria, and boasts a total of 119.893 hectares, of which 76.906 (64,1%) hectares are planted to white varietals and 42.839 hectares (35,7%) are planted to red varietals. The emblem of Sicilian wine by far and large in terms of plantings and popularity is still the very versatile and dynamic red varietal Nero d’Avola, and the classic white indigenous variety Catarratto.
On 26 May 2012, around 20 Sicilian wineries with more than 70 top quality Sicilian wines will come and meet with our press, trade and F&B Professionals at the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The exquisite selections include classic white, red and even sweet wines many of which have never been shown in Hong Kong & China before.
As a special highlight Mr. Carmelo Floridia (Executive Chef of Locanda Gulfi Restaurant) and Mr. Luca Gardini (Champion Sommelier of Europe 2009 and Champion Sommelier of the World 2010) will be present at the event to lead you through a gastronomic journey of Sicilian Haute Cuisine and premium wine pairing. Mr. Sammy Leung, Vice-Chairman of Hong Kong Wine Judges Association, is also invited to share his view about the Chinese food & wine paring of Sicilian wines.
